Why a heavier spring can make it easier

The first thing anyone learns on a reformer is that the springs have colours, and the second thing they learn is that everybody talks about them as though the colours mean something fixed. Ask about reformer spring settings in two different studios and you will get two different answers, delivered with equal confidence.

They are both right, which is the problem.

What do the spring colours actually mean?

Nothing portable. Spring colour is not standardised across manufacturers. One company's heaviest spring is another company's middle, and a third uses a different palette entirely.

This matters more here than it might elsewhere. Cairo's reformer scene has grown fast — something like twelve to fifteen dedicated studios opened across the city in a single year — and they did not all buy from the same maker. So a cue you learned in one studio in Sheikh Zayed can be actively wrong in another in Maadi, and will very likely be wrong on whatever machine ends up in your own home.

And some machines have no palette at all: bare stainless coils, unsleeved, every one the same colour as the next, so there is nothing to learn even in principle. Learn the direction, not the colour.

Which means the useful knowledge is not a colour chart. It is the rule underneath it, and the rule is about direction.

Why does a heavier spring sometimes make it easier?

Because a spring on a reformer does two opposite jobs depending on which way the carriage is going.

Here is the whole thing in one sentence, and it is worth committing to memory:

The spring always pulls the carriage home. If you are moving the carriage away from home, the spring is against you and heavier is harder. If the carriage leaving home is how the exercise fails, the spring is on your side and heavier is easier.

That is the entire mechanism. Everything else is an example of it.

Three places you can feel it

Getting on. The first time most people meet this is before a single exercise has started. Step onto a carriage set light and it slides away under your foot. Set it heavier and it stays put while you get on. Nothing has happened yet, no one is training anything, and already the heavier setting was the easier one.

Footwork. Lying down, feet on the bar, pushing the carriage away from home. Here the spring genuinely opposes you, so heavier means more force. But heavier also means more stability — the carriage is less inclined to wander, and the movement is easier to control. So the trade is not easy against hard. It is force against control, and calling either end of that "harder" is a category error.

Elephant, or Up Stretch. Standing on the carriage, hands on the footbar, pushing the carriage away underneath you. If the springs are light, the carriage leaves too readily and the exercise falls apart — you spend the whole thing chasing it. Heavier springs hold the carriage where you can work against it. This is the clearest reversal on the machine: the heavier setting is unambiguously the easier one, and almost every beginner sets it light because light sounds gentler.

Heavier is not harder. Heavier is more help in one direction and more resistance in the other.

What to do with this at home

Stop thinking in rungs and start thinking in directions. Before you change a setting, ask one question: is the carriage leaving home the point of this exercise, or the way it goes wrong?

If leaving home is the point — you are pushing or pressing something away — heavier is more work.

If leaving home is how it goes wrong — the carriage is running out from under you and you are fighting it — heavier is help.

We are deliberately not printing a table of settings, and you should be wary of any article that does. The right setting depends on the machine, its springs, their age and you, and a number written by a stranger cannot know any of those. What travels is the rule; the rungs do not.

One thing worth adding, because it is the other half of the same skill: your springs are only telling the truth if they are in condition. A spring that no longer returns to its free length has lost its pre-tension and is no longer delivering the load you think you selected — which means the setting is describing an exercise you are not actually doing.

And once you have the direction rule, the reason a session is ordered the way it is starts to make a different kind of sense: the sequence is not a playlist, and neither is the spring board.

Common questions

What do the colours on Pilates reformer springs mean?

There is no cross-manufacturer standard, and some machines ship bare unsleeved springs with no colour at all. One maker's heaviest spring can be another's middle, so a colour learned in one studio does not transfer. Learn the direction rule instead of the palette.

Does a heavier spring make Pilates harder?

Because the springs are set too light to hold it against your weight as you step across. Adding spring holds the carriage still for the mount — one of the clearest cases where heavier is easier.

How do I make an exercise harder without adding springs?

Slow it down. Tempo costs nothing, changes no setting, and makes the same movement substantially more demanding — which is why it is the first progression to reach for and the last one most people try.
